Explanations and Reasoning
Section E.
The goal of Intersociety is not merely to maintain its current involvement on campus but to expand and improve its engagement with the entire student body. The Block Party is an annual event hosted by all societies (KZX, APL, AO, LAS, and Auto Society). The party serves as an opportunity for the entire campus to gather and enjoy fellowship, food, drinks, entertainment, and games hosted by Intersociety. As of last year, more than 250 students and alumni attended the event. As student involvement grows each year, so does the cost of hosting this event. Food alone cost roughly $400 last year, not to mention the various other items, including decorations, a dunk tank, prizes, and a car smash. Generally, the entire event is paid for out of pocket by house members’ dues (i.e. the biennial/annual fee each member is required to pay for their membership in the society), which become increasingly more difficult each year as size and expenses grow. This bill will allow Intersociety to do as much as they can for the event and not be limited by a lack of funds. By hosting events like the Block Party, Intersociety seeks to connect all students from different floors and groups across campus in one large event. Funding this initiative supports the creation of inclusive, engaging, and meaningful social opportunities that strengthen community ties, encourage peer connections, and contribute positively to the overall student experience at LeTourneau University.
1. Expanding Impact Across Campus
· House dues primarily pay for all Intersociety events. School funding allows Intersociety to host larger, more engaging events that include students from multiple floors, clubs, and residence halls.
· This funding supports the university’s mission of enhancing student life across the entire campus, not just benefiting a small group.
2. Focus on Quality Events
· With funding from the school, Intersociety can plan higher-quality, larger, and more inclusive events.
· School support can cover food, decorations, entertainment, and materials without overburdening students financially.
3. Encouraging Campus Engagement
· By funding events through the Student Senate rather than house dues, Intersociety can actively invite students from different residence halls and backgrounds, strengthening community bonds.
· This approach demonstrates responsibility and accountability, showing the Senate that their funds are used for the broader benefit of the entire student body.
4. Reducing Financial Stress on Members
· Students already pay tuition and potentially dorm fees or personal expenses. Asking members to fund all events through house dues can be a burden.
· School funding ensures that participation in social, community-building events does not create financial hardship for members or attendees.
5. Alignment with University Goals
Position Intersociety as supporting the university’s mission: fostering leadership, community, and campus involvement. School funding aligns the Intersociety’s goals with the broader objectives of LeTourneau University, making it a win-win.
